How to choose the best mattress for a child

How important is the mattress actually?

Parents are often very demanding when it comes to choosing a mattress  for their child. They want what's best for this delicate newborn and want a quality mattress that will give them a better night's sleep.

Choosing the right mattress, surprisingly, becomes more difficult when your baby is changing cribs and moving to a toddler bed. Don't think its quality is any less important as your kids get older and sleep through the night! We and our children spend about a third of our lives sleeping, and where do we actually do it? Of course, on the mattress.  If we sleep badly, we get up on the wrong foot, we are nervous all day long. To make matters worse, we can get a whole bunch of health problems that can last for years. A good night's sleep enables healthy brain function and protects your baby's emotional well-being and physical health. Sleep deprivation can actually lead to obesity, behavioural problems, and poor concentration over time. Poor sleep also affects the immune system, weakens it and can unfortunately even lead to depression, especially in children. Choosing the right mattress for children is a very serious matter and it is just as important as for an infant, because your child will use it on average between 3 and 15 years. During this time, their height doubles and weight increases significantly, so a high-quality mattress with the right size is essential.

Below are the basic tips that are worth considering when choosing the right model for your child.

The best mattress for a child: basic principles when choosing

The mattress, in its simplest form, is a bed support, guaranteeing good sleep and rest, and ensuring maximum comfort, regardless of the body position. By maximum comfort we mean the maximum reduction of body pressure on the mattress. The right mattress  should therefore adapt to the shape of the child's body and create a "cradle" that is deep enough to distribute the weight well on the surface and relieve pressure points. It is responsible for sleep and decides whether the baby will have a deep sleep or a sleepless night. A good model provides the perfect balance between comfort and necessary support, keeping the natural alignment of the spine and the general posture of the child in the right position, which significantly improves the quality of sleep. The two basic rules are:

Choose a children's mattress with the right density and thickness.

A child uses a children's bed at least until the age of 15, and its weight can increase significantly during puberty, so we recommend a model with a density between 25 kg/m3 and 28 kg/m3.

The appropriate thickness of the mattress for children is from 10 to 12 cm. A thicker model will not provide additional comfort and may protrude from the bed frame. Below this thickness, however, it would be uncomfortable and would deteriorate too quickly.

Prefer children's mattress made of breathable materials

Whether for babies, children or adults, sleep quality will always be better on a natural fibre mattress. In fact, it is always healthier to sleep on a natural mattress model than on petrochemical derivatives. We carefully select the materials our mattresses are made of, due to their natural anti-bacterial and mite-reducing properties. Our models are free of chemical treatment and Oeko-Tex certified. All our models are removable and the cover is machine washable for a healthier night's sleep day after day (regular washing of the insert is much more effective and natural than chemical anti-mite treatments).

Age-appropriate mattresses

For each age group, there are specific criteria for choosing the right model for the child, which we will now present.

If you have a child under the age of 3, we recommend a model with a medium mattress firmness. As we all know, small children have soft and supple bones. A model that is too hard can therefore make the child feel uncomfortable while sleeping and burden their body for many years. Many doctors believe that memory foam mattresses are the most recommended models for children, because they adapt to the shape of the child's body and ensure that the child's delicate spine remains in a comfortable horizontal position, which is necessary to maintain correct body posture. For this reason, they also play a preventive role, especially in the case of diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

From the age of 4 years old , the child's skeletal system begins to dynamically grow and develop. Choose a firmer mattress during this time. Spring mattresses are one of the optimal solutions in this growth phase.

At the age of 7 children begin to experience higher levels of physical and emotional stress than in kindergarten.   An interrupted or otherwise reduced hour of sleep can become a serious problem as it can lead to general fatigue and other physical ailments, for example by having a negative effect on the bones. Your baby's bones need to be protected and properly rested, otherwise they will become too brittle over time. At this stage of growth, children need spring mattresses

Children grow up and their bodies change dramatically. The prepubertal period, which is the age group from 12 years up . In fact, the size, weight, and shape of a child's body vary significantly. Therefore, spring mattresses are not recommended for them, but models with a hard surface, which are made on the basis of polyurethane foam.

Benefits of different types of mattresses made from natural materials

Hypoallergenic mattresses for children

If your child has allergies, asthma or just sensitive skin, it's important that they sleep on a suitable mattress. So choose a hypoallergenic model that will keep your child from sneezing and fidgeting all night long. The hypoallergenic model is made of foam or latex, so mites and bacteria do not have access to it.

Foam mattresses for children

It is a model made of certified polyurethane foam with a weight of T25, which ensures constant ventilation during sleep and guarantees the appropriate level of softness and support for the child's rest. The T25 foam used in the mattress means that the mattress core is firm and flexible enough to provide adequate support for the spine. When a baby sleeps on its side or back, the spine is in the correct position, i.e. it is in a natural, upright position. One of the advantages of this type of mattress is that it can support a greater weight, evenly distributing the pressure exerted by the body wherever it presses against the mattress. It is breathable and anti-bedsore and has hypo-allergenic properties.

It is an orthopaedic mattress, ideal for people with back problems. Ideal for people suffering from allergies. Thanks to the harder areas, it adjusts to the shape of the body and thus keeps it in a comfortable position, which has a significant impact on the quality and comfort of our child's rest.

Children's mattresses: how to choose the most suitable model for the youngest

Is there a unique style of bedroom furniture, or is there a simple yet reliable way to make a kids bedroom unique, fun and safe?

Decorating a children's bedroom can throw many parents into a crisis, as each of them has high expectations for this room. Children's bedroom is the first place designed especially for children and we would like it to be perfect, as cosy as possible, but also practical and safe. How many times have you been afraid of leaving a small child alone in their room? There are countless doubts that bother you. You start to fear the worst, and you think that every corner of your home is a potential danger. It's normal at first, even if, trust me, the anxiety we carry within us will never go away. However, we can do a lot, creating an environment in the children's bedroom that is very safe, but also fun and colourful, and in which our beloved children will be able to spend hours frolicking and playing.

How to turn a simple children's bedroom into a dream bedroom?

How to create a dream children's bedroom: ideas and tips

The first thing to create a cosy and comfortable children's bedroom, apart from being practical and safe, is to choose a simple interior design style, easy to implement. After choosing the style that inspires us, we can move on to the choice of colours for the children's bedroom and the most appropriate furniture. Let's start one by one and see together which are the most recommended styles of furnishing and furniture for a children's bedroom.

A modern style children's bedroom.

Most parents choose to furnish a children's bedroom, focusing on the modern or minimalist styles. Why? The modern style allows us to create an environment that will be easy to organise, both in terms of overall aesthetics and in terms of the selection of furniture and its placement in the "bedroom" space. Also, when it comes to choosing colours, we have many interesting solutions at our disposal, and that's because, thanks to neutral shades, you can create a whole series of combinations that will give the children's bedroom an interesting, fashionable and unique look.

Pastel colours and space-saving furniture with modern and functional aesthetics will be perfect here.

Classical style children's bedroom

A classical style children's bedroom has many advantages in terms of beauty and aesthetics, but its negative characteristics are practical, especially if parents choose heavy furniture with very intense colours. We advise you to combine classic furniture with models with a simple line and shape. How to do it? Choose vintage furniture and create interesting combinations. Colourful retro furniture, such as sideboards with lots of drawers, but also fun and functional furniture for children, which will give a classic-style bedroom a touch of lightness, while remaining sophisticated and have refined shapes.

Children's bedroom in a minimalist style

Minimalist style is an increasingly popular style when it comes to furnishing a children's bedroom, especially when it comes to small spaces. The reason is simple, a small space cannot be burdened with too much furniture and very expressive colours, because it would be better to choose furniture and accessories with simple shapes and bright colours. Be careful, however, because creating such a "clean" space can make the bedroom feel too soulless and anonymous. Here, a special role can be played by the right accessories that will give the children's room an original and unique character, even if kept in a minimal style.

The 3 styles of interior design described above are the most often chosen when it comes to decorating a children's bedroom. You can also combine various selected elements of these interior styles to create something personalised and very original, which will basically define your one-of-a-kind children's bedroom.

Remember to manage individual spaces well, buy furniture that is not too large and rather characterised by a simple line and aesthetics. Also remember to use light colours.

What should be done after the style of the furniture has been determined? Let's move on to the most important element of the children's bedroom, namely the bed, and with it to the careful selection of the children's mattress.

Children's mattresses: what they are and how to choose the most suitable model

Buying a children's mattress can be extremely stressful as it is an important investment and it is one of the pieces of furniture that significantly affects the quality of life not only when sleeping at night, ensuring a good rest for the little ones, but also for everyday life.

What is a mattress? The mattress, in its simplest form, is a bed support, guaranteeing good sleep and rest, and ensuring maximum comfort, regardless of the body position.

For maximum comfort, this means as much as possible reducing the pressure of the body on the mattress. The mattress should therefore conform to the shape of the child's body and create a "cradle" deep enough to distribute the weight well over its surface and smooth out pressure points.

A proper mattress is responsible for your sleep and makes a real difference between a deep sleep and a sleepless night. A good mattress offers the perfect balance between comfort and the required support, keeping the natural position of the spine and the entire posture of the baby in the correct position , thus significantly improving the quality of sleep.

Why choosing the right mattress is so important

The support provided by the mattress is extremely important. Think about the fact that we and our children spend about a third of our lives sleeping, and where do we actually do that? Of course, on the mattress. If we sleep badly, we get up on the wrong foot, we are nervous all day long. In addition, we can develop a whole series of health problems that may drag on for many years. You don't want that to happen to your little one, do you?

Adequate support for optimal sleep

Good sleep allows for healthy brain function, protecting your baby's emotional well-being as well as their physical health. Sleep deprivation can actually lead to obesity, behavioural problems, and poor concentration over time. Poor sleep also acts on the immune system, weakening it, and unfortunately it can even lead to depression, especially in children. Choosing the right mattress is a really serious matter.

How to choose the right mattress for your child?

When it is time to choose a mattress for your child, you need to know that it must have a flat surface, be compact and comfortable, environmentally friendly and relatively flexible.

First of all , in order to choose the right model from among the various children's mattresses, the age and weight of the child should be taken into account. In addition to the material and type of mattress, also check the dimensions of the model you want to buy, how it was made, what its filling consists of, and all the materials and elements that make it up. We recommend that you read the instructions in detail first, especially for everything related to care and use, and inform yourself thoroughly about the durability of the mattress and its service life.

Children's mattresses: models suitable for all ages

For each age group, there are specific criteria for choosing the right mattress for your child. Let's look at it together.

Mattresses for toddlers under the age of 3

Do you need to buy a mattress for a very small child or a newborn? If you have a child under the age of 3, we recommend that you buy a medium stiffness mattress. As we all know, young children have soft and flexible bones, so if the mattress is too hard, it can cause discomfort during sleep, and consequently burden their body for years.

Many doctors consider a memory foam mattress to be the most suitable mattress for children as they offer maximum comfort, supporting the spine and relieving pressure. The shape memory foam mattresses adjust to the shape of the child's body, ensuring that the child's delicate spine is kept in a comfortable horizontal position, which is a necessary premise for the correct posture of the child. For this reason, these types of mattresses also play a preventive role, especially against disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Children's mattresses: 4 to 6 years old

From the age of 4 years old , the child's skeletal system begins to dynamically grow and develop. It is during this period that you should choose a more solid mattress.  Mattresses with springs are one of the most optimal solutions for this period of growing up.

Children's mattresses: 7 to 12 years old

At the age of 7 children begin to experience higher levels of physical and emotional stress than in kindergarten.   Interrupted or otherwise reduced hourly sleep can become a serious problem. Why? Because it can cause general fatigue and other physical ailments, for example by negatively affecting bones.

Your child's bones should be protected and rested properly, otherwise they will become too brittle and fragile over time.

Mattresses for children and teenagers: from 12 years

Children grow up and their bodies change dramatically. The prepubertal period, which is the age group from 12 years up. In fact, the size, weight, and shape of a child's body vary significantly. Therefore, springless mattresses with a solid surface made of polyurethane foam are the most suitable products here.

In conclusion, why do children need a good mattress?

Children need a good mattress because they grow every day and the mattress you choose has to adapt to the physical changes taking place in their body. Lack of sleep due to a bad mattress will make even the calmest and most relaxing day terrible. For example, getting up late due to irregular sleep patterns will cause your child to be late for school and in a bad mood. It is worth remembering that children in the age group from 3 to 12 years old need as much as 10-12 hours of sleep . And not just any sleep. They need a deep and uninterrupted sleep to be able to feel refreshed and ready for the challenges of the new day.

Disturbed sleep is associated with difficulties in concentrating on important activities, such as maintaining attention during lessons at school. Moreover, a bad night's sleep can seriously impair a child's memory and behaviour. It also means that the lack of a good sleep will make the day difficult not only for the youngest members of the household, but, consequently, also for the parents!

Hypoallergenic mattresses for children

Another very important detail that should not be forgotten is choosing a mattress made of hypoallergenic materials.

If your child has allergies, asthma or just sensitive skin, it's important that they sleep on a suitable mattress. So choose a hypoallergenic mattress that will prevent them from sneezing and fidgeting all night long. The hypoallergenic mattress is made of foam or latex, so any mites or bacteria will not have access to it.
